Menu-plan Monday, April 21, 2008

This week’s ingredient — Cilantro.

I just prepared my garden bed for planting - next weekend will be a trip to the nursery for lots of herbs and veggies.  I can’t wait!  I have a few herbs that survived the winter (and more importantly, last summer’s drought), but I’m mostly starting over.  I’ll try growing cilantro again, but I haven’t had much luck in the past.

My husband seems to think that cilantro tastes/feels “fuzzy.”  Anyone else have that reaction?

Sunday:
Grilled Steak
Potato Salad

Monday:
Smoked Salmon Pizza

Tuesday:
Out to Dinner

Wednesday:
Fish Tacos

Thursday:
Braised Chicken with Spring Vegetables
Polenta

Friday:
(to be determined)

I didn’t get to making bagels last week, but I did try hamburger buns. I was mostly successful. I didn’t cook them quite long enough (or at least, I think that was my problem) so they sunk when I took them out of the oven. They still tasted really good and worked okay with my burger, so it was hardly a problem.

For a dessert, I’m trying a tropical fruit pavlova. However, as of now, my first attempt at the meringue has failed, and I’m not sure why. If you want to read about pavlovas generally, see here.  It’s a great, naturally gluten-free dessert.

  1. Ginger – I usually have my fish tacos with a slaw of sorts. Thinly sliced cabbage with a sauce made of tomatillas, avacado, sour cream, etc. Sort of a Mexican slaw.

  2. Yum, I love fish tacos, esp when sitting near the ocean on a beach in Mexico! I too am in the process of gardening. I just seeded some cilantro 3 days ago and can’t wait! Have you tried thinly sliced raw cabbage on your fish tacos? Happy eating!

  3. [...] Gluten Free Sox Fan- Karen is planting her herb garden this weekend. (Hopefully, Hubs and I will be gardening this weekend too!) She is making Fish Tacos, which is one of my favorite dinners! [...]

  4. I’ve heard a lot of people say that cilantro tastes like soap. I’ve read somewhere (though I can’t remember where) that it appears to be a genetic thing.

  5. Croquecamille – I’ll let you know how it goes. I’m just now experimenting with polenta. And I really liked the look of your chicken recipe. I love Italian and French cooking in general and am trying to learn more about it as I go.

Carrie – I’ve tried several versions of fish tacos. I’ll post a recipe once I get a good one.

  6. I want to try to make hamburger buns this week too! I want some for our cheeseburgers on Friday! Otherwise, I’ll just eat them plain as usual! ;-)

I also have been really wanting to try fish tacos! I’ll have to reserve that for a weekend meal sometime soon! LEt me know how they come out!!

  7. Thanks for including my dish in your menu plan! Let me know how it comes out. :)
